This is a great idea for many reasons. Connection between generations, teaching a language that seems to be disppearing and also bridging a cultural divide. I thought of doing this type of thing with my father-in-law but didn't. Thanks for picking up the dropped ball, Steve and Millie!

Dan

You ask a tough question -The closest I can come to telling you how to say chili in Yiddish is rossel flaysh - that's a dish made with beans and meat, not as spicey as chili -

Another challenge - Latenite mash -" Lavouna mishmush" Lavouna in Yiddish is Moon and mishmush - means lots of different things.

Have fun trying to say those words. Now I have given you a challenge!

Steve
I listened to the ipod you did with Zadi and Steve, thanks for all the good words.

Oy boy, do you sound good.

Marc
A shanen diynk! You'll be able to figure out what I am trying to say.

Bre and Beth
I love knishes too.

Carl
I can see that is going to be a fun experience and very rewarding for all who participate.

Shalom

Michael, Bill and Beth
I love knishes too as long as I don't have to make them myself!

Good hint for Carol, I'll pass it on.

Terri
You are a very wise woman, learning one language at a time is enough.

As they say in Yiddish - Mazel -(good luck)

Love it. It's great it because it's helping Millie remember as well as teaching us for the first time.

Pattie and Savadotty
You both have "shpilkes" (ant's in your pants) waiting for lesson #2, well, it's like this -
Before I left for Florida Steve and I prepared 5 yiddish classes so I have 4 lessons left.
I plan to put up one a month while I am down here so sit tight, next class will be up beginning of February.
In the meantime "zy gezunt." (be well)

Kay
Looks like you did your homework - you said it right! "Zayre Gut." (very good)

Jonny
You hit the nail on the head. As I'm trying to remember how to say the words in Yiddish, it's a learning experience for me too.

sorry for a bad comment, but I think that the lesson was very poor...

especially not being able to say a simple "zayt gezunt" in the end...

it is a very good idea to promote yiddish through podcasts, but you should think better how excatly you will do it...

Fun lesson, looking forward to the next one! Hope they get longer as you go... :)

"goodbye" depends on the time of day.
try "a gutn tog" (or as you'd say, "a gitn tug" based on your polish? dialect.)

Anonymous said...

She had a hard time saying good-bye in yiddish because the Yidden never truly say good-bye!
there is such a thing as a yiddish good-bye, which is exactly what millie was doing; she took her time usually the average yiddish good-bye takes a good ten minutes and about 7 'ill see you later' and 'be well's!

Layla said...

There is no true term for saying goodbye if anything people will say "agiten" which, in exact translation means good. You can recongnize this term by "agiten tug" good day, "agiten nacht" a good night, "agiten shabbos" good shabbos.. And so on. To say goodbye you would subsitute the word with a blessing such as hatzlucha- which is also Hebrew for good luck. There are pleanty more...

My guess is whoever gets these scholarship spots are probably not likely to be known names in the Fortnite community, mmogo fortnite items shop as those people are making that streaming cash, and most of them are older than 17-18, not just going to begin college. So, it could be you, I suppose, a better-than-most Fortnite participant who'd like some cash to go to college in Ohio.

I'll post more about open tryouts when that info is accessible, but begin your training today, fortnite items for sale as this surely won't be the past Fortnite scholarship we see in this country.Fortnite proceeds to add and subtract weapons from the game, and this time, some handsome brand new guns are probably being added, according to a recent leak.
